Gangotri is a small town and a significant pilgrimage site situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage destinations and holds great religious importance in Hinduism. Gangotri is located at an elevation of approximately 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayas.

The town is primarily known for the Gangotri Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Ganga (the river Ganges). According to Hindu mythology, it is believed to be the place where the river Ganga descended to Earth from Lord Shiva’s locks. The temple was built by the Gurkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century and has undergone several renovations since then. It is made of white granite and features an elegant architecture reflecting the traditional Garhwali style. The temple remains open from May to November, and during the winter months, the idol of the goddess is moved to the nearby village of Mukhba.

Gangotri is situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, which is one of the main tributaries of the Ganges. The river is known for its crystal-clear water and is considered sacred by Hindus. Pilgrims visiting Gangotri often take a dip in the icy waters of the river as it is believed to cleanse sins and purify the soul.

The town offers captivating views of snow-capped peaks, including the majestic Bhagirathi Sisters. It is surrounded by scenic landscapes, lush green valleys, and picturesque meadows. The rugged terrain and alpine forests in the vicinity of Gangotri attract nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Treks to destinations like Gaumukh, the source of the Ganges glacier, and Tapovan are popular among visitors.

Gangotri can be reached by road from major cities in Uttarakhand. The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is approximately 270 kilometers (168 miles) away. The closest railway station is also in Dehradun.

The pilgrimage season in Gangotri usually starts in April or May and lasts until October or early November. During this time, the town sees a large influx of devotees and tourists who come to seek blessings and experience the divine aura of the place.
