Kedarnath is a revered pilgrimage site located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. Situated amidst the majestic Himalayan ranges, it holds immense religious significance in Hinduism. Kedarnath is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage destinations and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The town of Kedarnath is situated at an elevation of approximately 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest among the Char Dhams. It is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, with snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and the Mandakini River flowing nearby.

The main attraction in Kedarnath is the Kedarnath Temple, which is believed to be over 1,200 years old. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (lingams of light) and is considered one of the holiest Shiva temples in India. The temple’s architecture reflects the traditional North Indian style, with its stone walls and intricate carvings. Due to its remote location and harsh weather conditions, the temple is open for devotees only from April/May to October/November. During the winter months, the idol of Lord Kedarnath is transferred to Ukhimath, where it is worshipped for six months.

To reach Kedarnath, pilgrims have to undertake a trek of about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Gaurikund, which is the base camp for the pilgrimage. The trek is an arduous but rewarding journey, passing through picturesque landscapes, including dense forests and scenic valleys. Palki (palanquin), mule, and helicopter services are also available for those who cannot undertake the trek on foot.

Apart from the temple, Kedarnath offers a tranquil and serene environment for meditation and introspection. The region is also known for its association with several mythological tales and legends, adding to its spiritual aura.

Kedarnath is located in close proximity to other important pilgrimage sites like Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. Many devotees combine their visit to Kedarnath with these destinations, making it part of their Char Dham Yatra.

The nearest airport to Kedarnath is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is approximately 238 kilometers (148 miles) away. The nearest railway station is Rishikesh, about 216 kilometers (134 miles) from Kedarnath.
